County Government Education Institute


Providing educational opportunities for county government personnel is a major function of ACCA. Beginning in 2010, the County Government Education Institute, administered by the Association, provides redesigned educational programs for county personnel working in the courthouse and for personnel in other county offices.

The programs offered by CGEI replace the prior certification programs offered for county administrative, engineering and 9-1-1 district staff. However, all credits received under the prior educational programs will be transferred to the new program. Personnel will retain all course credits previously obtained and receive certification upon satisfactory completion of any remaining courses needed. Persons who have received certification under the prior programs will retain that certification provided they maintain their continuing education requirements.

The Alabama Local Government Training Institute will oversee administration of CGEI and provide certification for successful participants. This statutorily-created governing board has for more than 20 years administered the mandated-training program for new county commissioners. The expertise and experience of ALGTI will be a tremendous asset to CGEI.

The County Government Training Institute offers two levels of education:

  1. Basic-Level Classes

    The Basic-Level Training Program consists of four classes designed to provide county personnel with a solid overview of county government. The Basic-Level courses are required for personnel participating in one of the certification programs, but these classes are also available to employees working in other areas of county government. Personnel in county emergency management departments and county revenue offices are encouraged to participate in the Basic-Level Program. Additionally, this program is open to staff in the sheriff’s office, probate office, and tax offices.

    Each class includes 12 hours of instruction conducted at a day-and-a-half training session. Personnel may take any or all of the four classes, and a Certificate of Completion will be awarded to all who satisfactory complete all four classes.

    • Ethics of County Officials and Employees
    • Personnel Administration
    • Finance and Revenue

  2. Certification - Level Classes

    In addition to the Basic-Level classes, CGEI offers certification training programs for staff in the administrative, engineering, and 9-1-1 district offices. Each program requires completion of the four basic-level courses and additional training requirements providing more advanced educational opportunities relevant to their areas of expertise. Persons receiving certification must maintain continuing education requirements to remain certified.

Registration is now open for the following courses. Click here to register online for any of these classes. Registration is $175 per course. Once you enter the AVECTRA system, click on Upcoming Events, then Event Category, and finally CGEI Course to find the class you would like to attend. All courses will be at the Marriott Legends at Capitol Hill in Prattville. To make your room reservations, call and mention the name of the class you are attending. Room rates are $99 per night.

Directions to the Hotel: Take Interstate 65 to exit 179. Travel west approximately one half mile to the third traffic light and turn left onto Highway 82. The hotel entrance is one quarter mile on the left.  The address is 2500 Legends Circle, Prattville, AL 36066.

Registration and Cancellation Policy
Registration for each class closes two weeks prior to the date of the class.  Payment must be received prior to the date of the class, or registrants must pay with cash or check on site.  We do not bill registrants.

Cancellations must be made at least two weeks prior to the date of the class. Registrants will still be responsible for payment for cancellations made with less than two weeks notice, and no refunds will be available within two weeks of the class. Class participants will only receive credit for the class if they attend the entire class.  There are no exceptions to this policy.
